Origin Story

Having a mutual friendship and a love for music, Aaron and Caleb started forming bands fresh out of high school. For almost ten years, a number of projects ensued. Genres spanned from heavy-alternative-rock, garage-pop, cover bands and atmospheric-prog-experimental to straight up club-dance. But always with one key ingredient missing; the ability to retain a drummer. The journey did however prove successful in firmly establishing the shared belief that songwriting is key.

After losing another drummer in mid 2017 the lads concluded (out of sheer necessity) that perhaps a two-piece was the way forward. While logistically two people is a dream; the ability to play live is substantially limited and was cause for some experimenting. Because of this conundrum Flood the Moon had initially begun as only a writing and recording project, enlisting long time friend and producer James Newhouse with the thought to later define the live element.

Fast forward to early 2019, with Aaron and Caleb having written and recorded enough material to play live, the postponed reality finally hit. How will this work as a live performance?

Backing tracks (or prerecorded loops) was familiar territory so thus seemed a good place to start. Having enough tracks already recorded the outset seemed close. With Aaron traditionally fronting the band on Guitar / Keyboard this seemed the next logical step and with Caleb the ever solid groove engine on bass guitar, a blurry outline of a live show emerged. Time to book some venues.

It failed.

After a small handful of shows and only the most loyal of fans impressed, the result was clear. Heavy flop. Something was missing, the shows didn't feel vulnerable, raw or even 'live'. Rather, it felt more like karaoke. Potential new fans were non-existent. Deflated and forlorn Flood the Moon was out of answers.

After a week or two of brainstorming someone suggested Aaron try drumming live. He had 'paid his dues' drumming in a cover band intermittently over the last decade and perhaps that could instil the much needed energy the live shows needed. With the absence of any other ideas it was agreed there was nothing to lose. So with the guitar and synth parts added to the backing track and the drums removed from it, rehearsals resumed. Instantly it felt good, but the real test would be whether it worked live.

This question was answered (surprisingly) in the form of an intimate house party. On a balmy October night in Albany, on the outskirts of town, perched on a small rickety veranda Flood the Moon finally launched.

Who would have thought a two-piece band with a lead singing drummer, an energetic bass player and a massive electro/synth backing track would work? But somehow through trial and error, absolute necessity and possibly some interstellar aid, it does!
